My letter to the editor published by the Capital Times today:

Dear Editor: It’s sad that with so many important questions to ask Joel Kleefisch, the Cap Times chose instead to publish a puff piece, “Q&A: Rep. Joel Kleefisch reflects on Wisconsin’s great outdoors, life in a political family.”

An overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites support legalizing medical marijuana. There is strong support for taxing and regulating adult use of cannabis. And certainly, few support the fact that second-offense possession of marijuana, any amount, remains a felony in Wisconsin.

Yet Kleefisch, who chairs the committee where legislation sits that would address all these issues, has not scheduled public hearings on the legislation.

“An overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites support legalizing medical marijuana. There is strong support for taxing and regulating adult use of cannabis. And certainly, few support the fact that second-offense possession of marijuana, any amount, remains a felony in Wisconsin.”

Kleefisch was a guest last week on “The Devil’s Advocates” radio show and demonstrated an incredible need to be properly briefed about cannabis. He stated there were “flaws in the medical marijuana argument” because synthetic THC capsules are available by prescription.

Discussing legalization, Kleefisch echoed Gov. Scott Walker’s ridiculous assertions that people can drink alcohol socially, but the same cannot be said of pot.

Public hearings would attract the kind of experts Kleefisch is so woefully in need of and begin the debate citizens want to hear. The Q&A could have been a much better read without all the softball questions.
