Wisconsin congressional delegation splits on medical cannabis for veterans

Cannabis has been shown to be beneficial for many ailments suffered by veterans. But Wisconsin Republicans apparently do not agree. (Photo Copyright

The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday narrowly rejected an amendment by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon) to allow the Veteran’s Administration to help veterans access medical marijuana by a 213-210 vote. The Wisconsin delegation split along party lines with the state’s three Democrats, Reps. Ron Kind, Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan voting in favor and the five Republicans, Reps. Sean Duffy, Glenn Grothman, Reid Ribble, Paul Ryan and F. James Sensenbrenner voting against veteran access to medical cannabis.

The Hill reported “A total of 35 Republicans voted in favor of the amendment, while eight Democrats voted against it. Boos ensued from the Democratic side of the House chamber when Republicans closed the vote despite the razor-thin margin.”

California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher chided his fellow Republicans saying, “As Republicans, we supposedly believe in the doctor-patient relationship. But apparently some of my colleagues believe that relationship is not relevant when it comes to VA doctors and their patients.”

The vote was significantly closer than a 2014 vote on the same amendment, despite Republicans gains in the 2014 elections. The amendment also had fewer Democrats voting against it.
