The offices of lead sponsors Reps. Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) and Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) report both LRB-0188, a hybrid cannabis legalization/medical bill and LRB-1353, a cannabis decriminalization proposal, are seeing a lot of interest and support, so far mostly on the Democratic side.
Sargent’s bill LRB-0188, introduced April 13, has 14 cosponsors with the deadline to sign on being May 1. Learn more about her bill and the issue of marijuana prohibition here: Rep. Sargent: WI Marijuana Solution.
LRB-1353, the cannabis decriminalization bill sponsored by Barnes already has 12 Assembly cosponsors including Rep. Sargent and Rep LaTonya Johnson (D-Milwaukee). Rep. Barnes announced his bill in a 4/20 (April 20) press conference in Milwaukee.
On the Senate side two Democrats have signed on, Sen. Nikiya Harris Dodd (D-Milwaukee) and Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) who is the Senate sponsor of LRB-1353. This is Sen. Larson’s first time as a lead sponsor on a cannabis law reform bill.
