Former Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager dies, supported medical cannabis

Sad news today with Wisconsin media reporting the passing of former Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager from cancer at age 62 early Saturday surrounded by family at her home in Fond du Lac.

Former Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager talks with Jacki Rickert at the March 29, 2004 St. Patrick’s day with Frank Boyle fundraiser in Madison.

On March 29, 2004, Lautenschlager was among guests at a fundraiser for then State Rep. Frank Boyle (D-Superior) at the Cardinal Bar, that the late Jacki Rickert and I attended. I snapped a couple photos of Jacki and Lautenschlager, along with then-Lt. Gov. Barb Lawton, and then State Rep. Mark Pocan, discussing state medical cannabis legislation at the event.

Lautenschlager, the only woman to hold the post, was elected in Nov. 2002 and served from 2003 to 2007. Previously, she also served as a state representative, a local district attorney, and the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Lautenschlager was the second ex-Democratic Wisconsin Attorney General to die this month, preceded March 16 by former AG Bronson LaFollette, who was 82.

Lautenschlager’s son, Josh Kaul, is currently the only 2018 Democratic candidate for Attorney General running against current  Attorney General, Brad Schimel, a Republican and longtime opponent of any loosening of state pot laws, even medical cannabis, in what is looking to be a two-person campaign.
