U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin votes aye as Senate Appropriations Committee passes amendment to extend ban on DEA interference with state medical pot programs

Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted 22-8 to pass the Mikulski Amendment to the Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) Appropriations bill. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was among the 22 senators who voted in favor. The vote extends the prohibition on the DEA and Department of Justice from interfering with state medical marijuana laws through fiscal year 2016.

Sen. Mikulski’s amendment has identical language to the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment, which recently passed the House 242-186. The Wisconsin House delegation voted in favor by a 6-2 margin. Although the amendment is currently in effect, the protections will expire at the end of this September unless it is approved the year by both the House and Senate and signed by the President.

Huge pot bust in Winnebago County

A 64-year-old town of Vinland man is free on a signature bond after being charged in the largest marijuana bust in Winnebago County’s history. Gerald W. Walters was charged Tuesday, June 9, in Winnebago County Circuit Court with one count of manufacturing or delivering more than 10,000 grams of marijuana, after authorities say they seized nearly 500 pounds of cannabis worth as much as $1.5 million this week from his home. Walters has no prior criminal record according to online court records. This case gives a glimpse into the size of the cannabis market here in Wisconsin and the economic benefits the state is missing out on by continuing to enforce prohibition while much of the nation is moving the other direction.

June 14: “One Good Year” Film Screening at High Noon Saloon

ONE GOOD YEAR tells the story of the everyday work of four medical marijuana growers and their unique community behind the Redwood Curtain in the remote hills of Humboldt County, California. While “Humboldt” has become synonymous the world over with high-grade marijuana for both the medical and black markets, the outside world knows little about the farmers themselves and their lives, history, dreams, and hopes for the future. Screening starts at 4 pm at High Noon Saloon at 701 E Washington Ave # A, Madison, Wisconsin 53703. Donations accepted at the door. Come a little early to get settled. From a review: “One Good Year details the trials and tribulations of cannabis farmers in California. As its title belies, the documentary takes cross-sections of the cannabis harvest cycle, picking up pieces of biography and personal anecdotes along the way.” Trailer for One Good Year below:
