New Marquette Law school Poll finds 59% support for cannabis legalization in Wisconsin

A new Marquette Law School poll released today finds 59% answering yes to the question, “Do you think the use of marijuana should be made legal, or not?” 35% said no.

In the previous poll, released August 22, 2018, 61% said marijuana should be fully legalized and regulated like alcohol with 36% opposed. The same question asked in the poll released in July 2016, which found 59% support. and 39% opposed.

Here is the breakdown on the results released today:

Marijuana legalization

Fifty-nine percent of respondents say that use of marijuana should be made legal, while 35 percent oppose legalization. When this question was last asked in September 2014, 46 percent favored legalization and 51 percent were opposed.

An alternative wording of the question produced similar results. When asked if marijuana should be “fully legalized and regulated like alcohol,” 58 percent favored legalization and 36 percent opposed.

  1. I’ve been seeing a rumor on the Internet that the Wisconsin Tavern League is dropping its opposition to legalizing. I wonder if anybody can verify this? It would make sense. Cannabis is so mainstream now that you see magazines about it at the grocery store. And while legal weed might be bad for the booze-biz, ticking off young people by opposing legal weed could be even worse for business!

  2. I guess we can infer from this that there are at least some Republican voters who favor legalization, or are at least “on the fence” about it. Unfortunately, Republican politicians remain firmly in the pocket of the Tavern League and the beer industry.

    [A bit off-topic: I would encourage readers to remember to vote for Lisa Neubauer in the upcoming state supreme court election on April 2. Her opponent is a right-wing religious culture-warrior whose positions on the issues are very unlikely to be aligned with regular readers of this blog!]
